Statement on the Criminal Indictment of Donald Trump for his Attempts to Overturn the Results of the 2020 Election

On August 1, 2023, Donald Trump was indicted on four counts of criminal conspiracy for trying to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

Ann Toback, CEO of the Workers Circle responded:

It’s really quite simple. In a democracy, no one is above the law – not even a former president.

Donald Trump knew he had lost the 2020 election and didn’t want to give up power. So he and his allies worked on many schemes to overturn the results – including manufacturing fake electoral certificates declaring Trump the winner. These attempts to subvert the will of the American people finally culminated in the horrifying violence of the January 6 insurrection.

For the first time in American history, a sitting president attempted to obstruct the peaceful transfer of power.

Trump and his allies attacked the foundational practices of our democracy: free and fair elections, the peaceful transfer of power, and the rule of law. And Trump lied and continues to lie about the 2020 election results and our reliable election system which conveys the votes of the American people.

Yesterday, a grand jury composed of everyday Americans reviewed the overwhelming evidence and issued a four-count criminal indictment against the former president for trying to overturn the 2020 election. The American people deserve to have this matter be brought to trial promptly. We encourage everyone to read the indictment in full, understand the criminal charges, to contemplate their gravity, and to share this information widely.

As a Jewish organization whose founders fled autocracy and persecution to seek democratic freedoms and build a better and more beautiful world for all, we say again: no one is above the law, not even a former president.
